Succulent Smoked Beef Burgers in 30 Minutes

This recipe elevates the classic burger to a new level of flavour, introducing a smoky touch that perfectly complements the succulence of the beef, all ready in around half an hour. It’s a clever approach to achieve a truly satisfying meal without lengthy waits, ideal when time is limited but the desire for something special is strong. Efficiency is key: whilst the burgers are cooking, you can prepare the accompaniments, ensuring everything is ready simultaneously for a stress-free supper.

Quick Overview

  • Preparation Time: 10 minutes
  • Cooking Time: 15 minutes
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 21.2 oz (600g) beef mince (with at least 20% fat)
  • 1 tsp sweet smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 4 burger buns, brioche or classic
  • 4 slices of mild Provolone or smoked Scamorza cheese
  • 4 Romaine or Iceberg lettuce leaves
  • 1 ripe tomato, sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
  • Mayonnaise or sauce of choice, to serve
  • Extra virgin olive oil, for greasing

Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine the beef mince with the smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Gently mix with your hands until the ingredients are just combined, being careful not to over-compress the meat.
  2. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties approximately 3/4 inch (2 cm) thick, creating a slight indentation in the centre of each patty to prevent them from bulging during cooking.
  3. Heat a grill pan or griddle over a medium-high heat. Lightly grease the surface with olive oil.
  4. Cook the burgers for 4-5 minutes per side for a medium doneness, or until your desired level of cooking is reached. In the last 2 minutes of cooking, place a slice of cheese on top of each burger and cover the pan to allow it to melt.
  5. Whilst the burgers are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns on the same griddle or in a clean frying pan for about 1-2 minutes, until golden.
  6. Assemble the burgers: spread mayonnaise (or your chosen sauce) on the base of the toasted buns, add the lettuce, tomato, red onion, the burger with melted cheese, and cover with the top half of the bun.

Serving & Leftovers

Serve the smoked burgers immediately to enjoy them at their best. Any leftover cooked burgers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. It is recommended to reheat them gently to maintain their succulence. Fresh condiments such as lettuce and tomato should only be added just before serving.
