Quick Overview

  • Preparation Time: 15 minutes
  • Cooking Time: 15 minutes
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 14 oz (400g) beef mince (or pork and beef mix)
  • 1.8 oz (50g) breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium egg
  • 1 oz (30g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, finely minced
  • 10 fl oz (300ml) tomato passata
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine the beef mince, breadcrumbs, egg, grated Parmesan cheese, half of the chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Gently mix with your hands until the mixture is uniform.
  2. Shape the mixture into approximately 16-20 small, walnut-sized meatballs. Place them on a plate while you prepare the pan.
  3. Heat 1 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook the meatballs for 8-10 minutes, turning them frequently, until they are evenly golden on all sides and cooked through. Remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
  4. In the same pan, add the remaining 1 tbsp of olive oil and the reserved chopped onion. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the onion is soft and translucent.
  5. Add the tomato passata, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, smoked paprika, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce the heat and simmer the sauce for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavours to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
  6. Return the meatballs to the sauce, stirring gently to coat them. Let them simmer together for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the meatballs to absorb the delicious flavours of the sauce.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with fresh chopped parsley if desired.

Serving & Leftovers

These meatballs are excellent served with fluffy basmati rice, creamy mashed potatoes, or a crisp green salad. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days and gently reheated in the microwave or on the hob.
